Before we arrive
Three things to do right now
These few steps limit the damage while you're waiting.
1. Turn the water off
Find the internal stop tap — usually under the kitchen sink — and turn it clockwise. Then open the cold taps to drain the pipes down.
2. Make it safe
If water is anywhere near sockets, lights or the consumer unit, switch the electrics off at the mains. If you smell gas, call 0800 111 999 first.
3. Call us
Tell us what's leaking, where from and whether the water is off. That decides how we prioritise the job.

Good to know
Emergency plumbing questions
What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Water you can't stop, a burst pipe, a leak coming through a ceiling, a leak near electrics, no water at all, or no heating and hot water in cold weather with vulnerable people in the property.
How quickly can you attend an emergency?
It depends on where we are and what we're already on. Call and we'll tell you straight away whether we can get to you and roughly when — we won't string you along.
What should I do while I wait?
Turn the water off at the internal stop tap, open the cold taps to drain down, switch off electrics if water is near them, and move anything valuable clear of the water.
Where is my stop tap?
In most Tameside houses it's under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs cupboard, or near where the mains enters the property. It's worth finding it now rather than during a flood.
